As much as we all would wish a magic pill would be invented that would have the ability to turn us into lean, mean, fighting machines… there’s just no such thing. We all have those moments where, after a grueling workout, we look in the mirror and think to ourselves, “There has to be an easier way to lose weight.”
Unfortunately, there isn’t.
You still need to put in the consistency and dedication; however, there are a few different things you can implement into your lifestyle to help you along the way. In this article, I’m going to list some ways of how to lose weight without exercise. Pretty sweet, right?

1. GET MORE SLEEP
It sounds so trivial, yet if you want to lose weight without exercise, you are going to need to get the recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep each night. When you do not get enough sleep, not only are you tired all day long, but your stress hormones go through the roof and can cause you to be hungry more frequently – ultimately leading to weight gain from overconsuming calories.
Control your sleep to control your hunger and put yourself in the position to make smart nutritional choices and drop some weight in the process.
2. TRACK YOUR CALORIES
I’m a huge fan of MyFitnessPal and have seen several of my clients achieve amazing results by simply tracking their calories via this free app. When you hold yourself accountable for your nutrition and what you put in your mouth (as well as how much), you have a better chance to lose weight without exercise.
While a calorie is not a calorie and we could spend an entire article writing on that topic alone, it truly comes down to how many calories you are consuming on a daily basis versus how many you burn at the end of the day.
If you are in a caloric surplus (excess calories that are higher than your maintenance needs), you can gain weight. If you are in a caloric deficit at the end of the day (fewer calories than needed for maintenance), you can lose weight.
Tracking what you put in your body will make you accountable for every single one of the calories you put in your mouth – you just need to be honest with yourself by actually putting in the correct information and being dedicated to doing so.
You would be amazed by how many calories you are actually consuming on a daily basis if you aren’t currently tracking them. I highly encourage you to try this if you want to lose weight without exercise.
3. SIMPLY MOVE MORE
I can hear people already shouting at me for this one. “But Matt, moving more is basically like exercising. Exactly how does this play into the subject ‘How to Lose Weight Without Exercise’ if I still need to move?”
First off, you move every day – that’s nothing new. Majority of you move by means of walking (unless you like jogging/running from point A to point B). So, what am I talking about?
Rather than looking for the Rockstar parking spot up front at work, the mall, the grocery store, etc., you should park further back in the lot and walk up to the store. Rather than taking the elevator up or down to a different floor, take the steps.
MOVE MORE. Those extra calories will add up over time and can help you lose weight without exercise (the true definition).
In the end, you won’t even know you are burning more calories because you don’t associate walking around the grocery store and other daily activities as “exercise.” Move more, and you’ll be surprised at the changes your body makes.
4. EAT MORE PROTEIN & FIBER
If you want to improve your chances of not overeating on a daily basis, then you need to consider increasing your protein and fiber intake. Both protein and fiber can help you lose weight without exercise by simply helping you feel satiated throughout the day. When you are starving, you’ll eat just about anything to get something in your stomach. This is primarily where the wheels fall off of most diets. You raid the refrigerator, the pantry, or the vending machine at work – all terrible ideas.
The key is to not only have protein and fiber in your meals, but when you are looking for a healthy snack to consume in the middle of the day, look for something like nuts, an apple, raw broccoli, beef jerky, hard-boiled eggs, cottage cheese, or even a protein shake.
Learn to love protein and fiber, and you’ll love the results you’ll yield by making the change.
5. ELIMINATE HIGH-CALORIE AND SUGARY BEVERAGES
It has been shown that consuming high-calorie and/or sugary beverages is linked to weight gain.
Why is that?
It’s actually quite simple and makes total sense. When you drink beverages, how many of you know exactly the quantity you consumed? You probably don’t, right? You go out to eat and order a soda. Then, refill after refill go by, and before you know it, you’ve consumed hundreds of excess liquid calories that served no purpose or benefit to reaching your goals.
If you want to lose weight without exercise, then you’re going to need to put down the high-calorie and sugary beverages.
These types of beverages serve no purpose in our diet. They don’t help us feel full, and the sugary beverages can even make us feel hungrier. WHAT!?
So, on top of taking in excess sugar that isn’t healthy, you’re taking in extra calories that will also increase your chances of overeating as well. It’s a double-edged sword, consuming things such as soda and juice. For that reason, eliminate them from your diet.
Instead, you should be looking to consume WATER. And in high quantities. Most people are not drinking enough water throughout the day. Water helps keep us hydrated, improves the health of our skin, enhances satiety, flushes out toxins in the body, and provides many other helpful benefits.
Best of all, it’s calorie-free.
Try to keep a water bottle with you at all times, no matter where you are. This will give you zero excuses to not be drinking it throughout the day.
While I recommend consuming strictly water each day, I understand some people want some flavor in their beverages. For that reason, you can also use beverages such as coffee or green tea throughout the day. Just make sure you don’t go overboard with the caffeine content.
