Right now the talk of the town throughout the internet is a showdown between Nick Walker and Jo Palacios at the 2026 IFBB Tampa Pro. But what’s really getting the conversation going is the fact that Jo is very much playing this like a humble competitor, meanwhile Nick is using every last opportunity to insist that he’s going to annihilate everyone. Why is The Mutant doing this? Why would he disrespect the competition in Tampa to this degree? If he was so good and if he was so ready and so poised to qualify, why didn’t he talk like this and jump into shows like the Pittsburgh or the New York Pro? Why is it that he has chosen the Tampa, which also happens to be Derek’s backyard to make such a bold claim with regard to how he’s going to fare there?
Tampa is no cake walk, either. Even though it’s not one of the big three shows it’s definitely in the conversation. Tim Gardner puts on a phenomenal contest and his association with Jake Wood is a matter of public record. Tim is a heavy hitter and usually his shows draw out top talent.
So why would the former North American champion talk like this? Why would he put this kind of pressure on himself? At the end of the day, what is necessary is simply to qualify. Whether you win by one point or you dominate the competition – it doesn’t really matter, right? I mean the goal here should be to win, but why do you have to win like this? Why does Nick feel the need to make everyone else around him smaller? If anything, he may be setting himself up for failure.
Over the years, I have come across bodybuilders that feel the need to broadcast their dominance. And that’s not something really that the bodybuilder should be doing himself. That is something that falls onto the media. For example, if I want to write an article and I want to speculate that Nick, Jo, or anyone else is going to dominate a particular lineup, then that’s my purview. As a writer that’s part of what I do. A handicapper would do the same. But for a competitor to draw that line in the sand is really nothing more than asking for trouble. I mean we saw what happened to Derek when he was coming up in the 212. He had a successful pro debut, qualified, took top five at the O and from there started writing checks that unfortunately his ass couldn’t cash in those early years. It took guys like Jose Raymond to tell Derek to back off, to not put himself in that public domain, to not make headlines but to bring his best. When a competitor puts themself in that spotlight, it usually comes with catastrophic results. Because unless Nick truly absolutely destroys Jo and the rest of the competition, then he will have come up short. AGAIN. And that’s even he barely squeaks by with a win.
I would also say that Jo has improved consistently and that I don’t think Nick is going to hit the stage in Tampa and dust the guy. Palacios has put on significant size without compromising his aesthetics. He’s also a competitor that comes dialed in. Now of course I know the temptation causing a lot of people to not even consider the potential of Jo or anybody upsetting Nick in Tampa. And that position comes from the fact that Nick has won the North Americans, that he won the Arnold Classic, and that he won the New York Pro three times. People look at what he has done on paper and what he has done in the past as a way to deny anyone from beating him today.
Basically unless a top three Olympian is in the mix, most people that subscribe to what a person has done in the past are not going to be all that impressed by competitors outside of that top three or top six battling Walker. They’re going to measure them by what they’ve done but not what they can do. And that is a colossal mistake because if bodybuilding teaches us anything- it’s that it doesn’t matter what you did in the past, it only matters what you do on game day.
The same logic applies to social media bodybuilders – guys that have the goon lighting, the angles, the special effects etc. They might look their best on Instagram, but they may look nothing like that on game day. It’s like who cares what you do posing in a mirror by yourself? What matters in physique-based sports is what the judges see. It’s what you show them. That is where the placings are decided. So again, what Nick did in 2020 or 2023 or 2025 doesn’t matter in 2026. And that cockiness that he has about him could actually be his undoing because instead of being humble like Jo he is literally predicting the future. And if he doesn’t win, then what?
You see, I never really understood what Nick’s whole approach was. From dropping a longtime coach to pretending to be self-coached to then getting another coach. But this last coach is really a no-name. It isn’t a big name coach. Did he do that because it would be easier for him to blame him for any shortcomings in his prep? Or did he do that because maybe he’s just testing the waters?
Why Nick didn’t hire the Guy is beyond me. I mean they brought one of the best looks he’s ever had and took a runner-up at the Arnold Classic. I would think that would have been more than enough of an audition to hire Cisternino for the rest of 2026 but I think Nick didn’t like the fact that he was outted. He didn’t self prep. So now what does he do? He says he’s insults his fellow competitors. He doesn’t even say dominate, he says he’s going to embarrass them. What kind of a professional athlete talks like that?
I certainly don’t think that a future Mr Olympia would get down like that. What a champion is supposed to do is bring their best and battle hard, pose hard, and try to keep their head up. But this whole idea of embarrassing the competition seems like bullying to me. It doesn’t even seem like self-confidence. I mean I am vocally critical of Derek for being overly confident. I think Lunsford at this point could even be called cocky, but there’s a difference, there is a stark difference between being cocky and just being a downright ass.
When Nick says he’s going to embarrass people it’s like he’s going to essentially look so good that people will question why those other people are sharing the stage with him. It isn’t exactly a very team-minded mentality. It isn’t the kind of mentality that’s going to grow the sport of bodybuilding, either. But I have to commend guys like Jo for not taking the bait. I don’t know if Nick is looking for drama but he’s not going to get it from Palacios.
And this goes back to a way of thinking that quite frankly I find to be a little bit of small minded. This idea that drama brings about hits. Drama may in fact bring about hits but to what end? If I was a competitor doing the Tampa and I read a direct quote from Nick Walker saying he was going to embarrass me, I probably wouldn’t be super enthused to do anything with him. I wouldn’t want to take photos with him, I wouldn’t want to shoot the shit with him backstage, I would probably hold a certain level of animosity for him. Because it isn’t just that he’s saying that he’s going to win, but he’s attacking what I’m going to do as well. That’s just very very low ball. And when you’re dealing with a guy like Nick, he will not hear any dissenting opinions. Whether it comes from his camp or it comes from the press or it comes from anywhere. If he doesn’t like what you have to say, he’s not going to listen to you, he’s not even going to process what you have to say, either. He’s just going to block you. That’s his mentality. That’s how he gets down. I know because he did it to me. And I didn’t even have harsh words for him. I had harsh words for his then coach who was a part owner of a company that dropped then 212 Mr Olympia Shawn Clarida. But Nick has this personality where if you say anything about anyone and he sees it and doesn’t like it – he’ll block you. It’s very much like Phil Heath used to be and may still very well be I don’t know. I don’t really care enough about Phil to talk about him so I can’t really speak with any level of certainty. Only the behaviors seem similar.
At the end of the day, I think Nick is setting himself up for a fall. He’s not going to embarrass anyone. If anything, he’s going to embarrass himself. Somebody who talks the way that he does is either going to bring 120% to the stage or may only bring 80%. Why do I say that? Because if he thinks that he’s going to embarrass the competition, he probably doesn’t think very much of them to begin with. And if he doesn’t think very much of them, he may not come at 100%. That may be exactly what ends the competitive year for him.
I am pretty sure that if The Mutant does not win in Tampa, he is not going to be getting a special invite. There is no reason he should get one. If he did get one, it would only be because he wasn’t good enough. And that right there is not a reason for somebody to get a place on the Olympia stage.
Yes, Nick Walker sells tickets. Yes, Nick Walker will sell pay-per-views, but if Nick Walker does not qualify in Tampa, then Nick Walker will pretty much be done for 2026. I don’t know if he’s a glutton for punishment but clearly he is not putting forward positive vibes. For whatever reason, he feels the need to be toxic and that toxicity might cost him dearly when he hits the stage.
Nick Walker will more than likely win in Tampa. Even though I’m not a big fan of his, I will readily admit to that. But bodybuilding is a sport full of surprises. And to be honest with you, if Jo wins in Tampa, I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised. I might be a little intrigued but not totally surprised. Jo Palacios is no lightweight. And the fact that he’s being humble and kind in the face of Nick Walker’s nastiness, speaks volumes.
Again, who knows if what Nick has to say about has lit a fire under Jo and if so, maybe Jo will shock the world. If Jo Palacios and Nick Walker stand in the middle of prejudging, I think the interwebs would go on fire. Imagine Nick isn’t even in the Top 2!! People would not be able to shut up. I mean could you blame them? I most definitely include myself in the fanfare. If Jo Palacios was dead center and Nick Walker was on the wings, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from taking to the Facebook groups, the message boards, and making videos on my pages.
With bodybuilding, anything can happen.
