Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia Gordonii (Asclepiadaceae) looks like a cactus, but is actually a milkweed-like plant that grows in Botswana and the Kalahari Desert in Southwestern Africa. It was just introduced to the US market in early 2004.
What does it do and what scientific studies give evidence to support this?
Hoodia Gordonii has been used by the South African San tribe for thousands of years. The San used this plant when they went hunting. Hoodia helped to prolong hunting trips by suppressing hunger, increasing energy levels and even improving libido!
Modern science has shed light on how Hoodia functions. It is believed that Hoodia sends signals to the brain that make the brain believe that the body is full, even when it is not. These signals are believed to be thousands of times stronger than the signals that sugar sends to the brain for the same reason.
This makes Hoodia a very powerful appetite suppressant, and a very effective weight loss product. For this reason it is included in many over-the-counter dietary weight loss supplements.
A molecule in Hoodia, P57, is believed to be responsible for Hoodias' ability to suppress appetite, increase energy levels, and help with weight loss.
Who needs it and what are some symptoms of deficiency?
Those who wish to suppress appetite, increase energy levels and lose weight can benefit greatly from using Hoodia as a nutritional supplement.
Users of the Hoodia supplement are reporting major weight loss totals and claim they have no hunger pangs. Some reports are coming in of people losing up to 100 pounds in 6 months on the Hoodia supplement. These types of testimonials are driving the market for Hoodia increasingly higher each day. There are essentially 3 reasons that Hoodia has become so popular.
1. Appetite suppressant- Hoodia is legendary for it ability to suppress the appetite. African bushmen have used it for over 1,000 years to suppress their appetite while on extended hunting trips. In some cases they would go a few days without eating after taking the plant, to control there hunger. Of course weight loss was not the primary goal for these bushmen, They were essentially taking it out of necessity because regular food may have been scarce.
2. Hoodia is all natural with no known side effects. To date, no study conducted has found Hoodia to have any harmful side effects. We know from history that the bushmen have taken it for centuries. They also have not had any harmful side effects. This is a definite advantage that Hoodia has over other recent supplements. The fact that Hoodia has no known harmful side effects makes it appealing to dieters.
3. A general feeling of well being. Hoodia has been reported by some to produce a general feeling of well being. This may actually be part of what makes it so effective. Researchers believe that this feeling of well being may contribute to dieters avoiding binge eating. Binge eating is often attributed to depression or boredom. A feeling of well being may help fight these feelings.
