Settlement Represents Model for Steroid Prosecutions Targeting Sports Nutrition Companies

VMG Global, the manufacturer of American Cellular Labs “Tren Xtreme” and “Mass Xtreme“, has pleaded guilty to one count of introducing unapproved drugs into interstate commerce and has agreed to a fine of up to $500,000. The VMG Global case is the first of several pending investigations targeting the marketing of steroidal compounds as dietary supplements since BALCO prosecutors have turned their attention from “steroids in sports” to “steroids in supplements”.

2010 Arnold Classic Weekend Parties
Each year in Columbus, Ohio, right after the Arnold Classic Pro Bodybuilding event, parties are usually held around town. MuscleMaster.com Conducts a Voluntary Nationwide Recall of Certain Body Building Products
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Northborough, MA – January 15, 2010 – MuscleMaster.com, Inc. (“MuscleMaster.com”) announced today that it is conducting a voluntary nationwide recall of all lots and expiration dates of the seventeen below listed dietary supplements sold between June 1, 2009 and November 17, 2009 (hereinafter “Recalled Products”).
FDA informed MuscleMaster.com that it believes that the Recalled Products contain ingredients that are steroids. Specifically, FDA advised MuscleMaster.com of its concern that the Recalled Products may contain the following ingredients that are currently classified, or the FDA believes should be classified, as steroids: “Superdrol,” “Madol,” “Tren,” “Androstenedione,” and/or “Turinabol.” While MuscleMaster.com cannot independently confirm the FDA’s concerns, that any one or more of the Recalled Products in fact contain these ingredients, MuscleMaster.com is undertaking this voluntary recall out of an abundance of caution and in deference to FDA’s stated concerns.

Marketers of Unproven Weight-Loss Products Ordered to Pay Nearly $2 Million
Court Rules in Favor of FTC in Case of Diet Tea and Bio-Slim Patch
A federal district court has ordered the marketers of an herbal tea and a diet patch to pay nearly $2 million to the Federal Trade Commission for making deceptive claims that both products would allow users to lose weight quickly without diet or exercise.
For nearly two years before the FTC complaint was filed, Bronson Partners, LLC and its officer, Martin Howard, marketed Chinese Diet Tea, telling consumers they could lose as much as six pounds a week by drinking one cup of the green tea after each meal to “neutralize the absorption of fattening foods.” Advertising in national magazines such as USA Weekend and Clipper Magazine, the marketers charged $24.95 plus shipping and handling for a month’s supply.

2011 Flex Pro Bodybuilding and Figure Championships
With the loss of the 2010 Ironman Pro, there will be no IFBB men’s pro bodybuilding in Southern California this year. But next year, Flex Magazine along with Ultimate Nutrition is bringing back men’s pro bodybuilding to Los Angeles, with the 2011 Flex Pro Bodybuilding and Figure Championships on February 26, 2011.

Classification of Three Steroids as Schedule III Anabolic
Steroids Under the Controlled Substances Act
AGENCY: Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Department of Justice.
ACTION: Final rule.

SUMMARY: With the issuance of this final rule, the Deputy Administrator
of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies the following
three steroids as “anabolic steroids” under the Controlled Substances
Act (CSA): Boldione, desoxymethyltestosterone, and 19-nor-4,9(10)-
androstadienedione. These steroids and their salts, esters, and ethers
are schedule III controlled substances subject to the regulatory
control provisions of the CSA.
DATES: Effective Date: January 4, 2010.

The 2010 NPC USA’s on July 30-31st in Las Vegas is going to be the biggest ever. And this year, they will be awarding FOUR IFBB Pro cards for the Men’s division, for the top 4 overall out of 7 divisions (last year, it was only 3). Dennis Wolf has officially joined the Florida-based supplement company BSN! The “German Giant” was sponsored for a number of years by fellow Florida supplement superpower Nutrex Research. With his genetic gifts, Dennis has a physique bodybuilders love. Born in Russia before his family eventually settled in Germany, Dennis began his competitive bodybuilding career in 1999. Dennis made his pro debut at the 2006 Europa Supershow. Since then he has become a top contender for the Olympia title. Realizing his enormous potential, Weider Publications signed Dennis to an exclusive publishing contract this past November. With a 16th place finish at the 2009 Olympia, it will be interesting to see how BSN utilizes his story in their ad campaign in 2010.
