victor How Will Victor Martinez’s Personal Tragedy Affect His Olympia Showing?
    By Joe Pietaro

It is difficult to imagine what Victor Martinez has gone through recently. To have one of your siblings go missing and then found to be the victim of a heinous crime is enough for anyone to accept. The emotional highs and lows during the time frame before Eridania Rodriguez’s body was positively identified must have been torturous and things will only get more painful as the charges and possible trial of the perpetrator begin to take place. Martinez, 38, was also the family member who identified his sister’s body at the medical examiner’s office.

FDA Nominee FDA Warning Casts Suspicion on Bodybuilding Supplements and Sports Nutrition Industry
    by Millard Baker

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Public Health Advisory (PHA) warning consumers to avoid using bodybuilding supplements claiming to contain “steroids”, “steroid-like substances”, “steroid alternatives” and “hormone products”. The FDA warning failed to give guidance on the specific product ingredients that were problematic. The extremely broad language cast suspicion upon all “body building supplements” marketed for performance enhancement because they might contain synthetic steroids (”FDA recommends that consumers should not use body building products marketed as containing steroids or steroid-like substances,” July 28).

DecaVol Steroid Scandal at Government Nuclear Weapons Facility
    by Millard Baker

Russ Walker, a security police officer at a high-security government nuclear weapons facility, was fired after testing positive for anabolic steroids. Walker attributes the positive steroid test to his use of the over-the-counter supplement identified as “DecaVol” manufactured by Advanced Muscle Science (AMS).

Russ Walker was a model employee at Wackenhut Services Inc. Oak Ridge (WSI-OR). WSI Oak Ridge is the private security contractor for the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant in Tennessee where nuclear warheads are manufactured for the U.S. military. Walker was asked to undergo steroid testing based on unspecified probable cause that he was in violation of company and Department of Energy policy.

Breaking News: Coleman Comeback Confirmed for 2010
    By Joe Pietaro

As heard first on today’s episode of MuscleSport Radio, Ronnie Coleman will make his comeback at the 2010 Mr. Olympia. The eight-time Sandow winner said in a live interview that he just made up his mind “a few days ago.”

Coleman originally intended on competing in this year’s Olympia but his travel commitments with BSN proved to be too much and would have affected his preparation.

The back injury that caused him to finish in fourth place at the 2007 Mr. Olympia and subsequent surgery that made him sit out 2008 is 100 percent and was not a factor in Coleman putting off his comeback by a year. Coleman feels that the time off will be an advantage for him, as far as the back recuperation and not putting his body through contest prep for the past few years.

allenmd Big Sean Allen Ready for the USAs
    By Joe Pietaro

You could tell a few months back that Sean Allen was going to be a force come the USAs. At the Muscular Development Block Party at Bob Bonham’s Strong and Shapely Gym in New Jersey, the 6?4? behemoth was looking as if he could have donned the posing trunks right then and there and earn his pro card.

On May 30, Allen weighed 295 pounds and was looking huge without that puffiness that some bodybuilders are still sporting eight weeks out from a show. The Garden State native felt that he was giving back at the event. “I just wanted to come out here and show that I’m one of New Jersey’s finest and mingle with the fans and show some support,” he said. He was unquestionably the largest person there and deservedly received a lot of attention. He was cordial and friendly and had a lot of fun with the youngsters that were in attendance, something that can go a long way in ensuring that the next generation of bodybuilding fans will be represented.

tren-xtreme Tren Xtreme Steroid Investigation Leads to Raids of American Cellular Labs and Max Muscle
    by Millard Baker

FDA Special Agent Jeff Novitzky, the agent who has become the face of the federal government witch-hunt against steroid users in professional sports during the BALCO scandal, has move his attention to investigating dietary supplement companies suspected of selling designer anabolic steroids.

Novitzky’s latest steroid investigation targeted two popular products sold and marketed as dietary supplements, “Tren Xtreme” and “Mass Xtreme”. These products were manufactured by American Cellular Labs Inc. (ACL) and sold exclusively through Max Muscle Sports Nutrition (MMSN) stores and via the ACL website (”Two Dietary Supplements Said to Contain Steroids,” July 23).

United States Attorney General Praises Use of Terrorism Laws to Disrupt Illegal HGH Market
    by Millard Baker

United States Attorney General Eric Holder praised the Justice Department’s use of terrorism laws to disrupt the illegal distribution of human growth hormone (hGH) during his remarks at a Justice Department leadership conference. Holder celebrated the use of the Patriot Act to eliminate a top supplier of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). The Patriot Act law “permitted” the United States to pursue an international biopharmaceutical company and seize millions of dollars “physically located” in another sovereign country.

    American Cellular Labs Raid

Tren Xtreme and Mass Xtreme, are manufactured by American Cellular Labs and marketed as a “potent legal alternative to” steroids. But according to the New York Times, authorities alleged in search warrants that the supplements contain steroids!

Are Max Muscle Stores In On It?

Authorities said that Max Muscle, a supplement store with about 100 locations, paid American Cellular Labs to be the exclusive retailer of these products. Maurice Sandoval (American Cellular’s CEO), said in a telephone interview that he himself never personally sold steroids but declined to comment on whether the company had ever sold steroids. Reporters phoned Max Muscle’s head office in Anaheim, California and were told that no one was available to comment on how many Max Muscle stores carried the American Cellular products. “This is not our product,” said the man, who would not give his name and hung up.

141-logo-vitaminworld NBTY Buys 350 Stores In The U.K.

Do you shop at Vitamin Shoppe, Vitamin World or GNC? Well the company that owns “Vitamin World” is called “NBTY” and they are absolutely massive. In fact, back in 2003 they plucked a small piece of GNC when they bought all the GNC stores in the U.K and some in Germany! The acquisition was relatively small: NBTY paid Numico $12 million for 49 GNC stores in the U.K. and 7 in Germany. They also bought store chain Holland & Barrett a few years ago (by outbidding GNC) to get a further foothold on the supplement market in the U.K. Well to solidify their dominance over the pond they’ve now just bought “Julian Graves” which is a chain of 350 food and confectionary stores in the U.K. The cost of the purchase was approximately $25 million USD. One has to wonder if NBTY’s next purchase will be GNC’s U.S. store chain?

    FXsupplements.com Lawsuit

FXsupplements.com has agreed to stop shipping unauthorized orders to customers, refrain from making false health claims, and clearly disclose its terms of service to future purchasers. The online vendor also agreed to provide refunds to customers that it overcharged for its products.?? Distributor Austin Hilton widely advertised their “acai berry” supplement as reducing the risk of heart attack, Alzheimer’s disease and cancers. Their ads also claimed the product could limit premature aging! Web advertisements indicated that the Acai Berry Maxx product was “naturally potent in antioxidants” and could flush up to 30 pounds of waste and toxins from the body. Hilton’s claims are not backed by sound scientific studies, and they have not been approved by the FDA.

phil-heath Phil Heath Knee Injury Scare During Guest Posing Appearance
    By Joe Pietaro

For a few moments during the NPC Colorado State Championship on Saturday evening, hardly a hush could be heard coming from the crowd. Phil Heath was barely a minute and a half into his guest posing routine before he attempted to perform a front double bicep pose low to the ground with his right leg fully extended.

All of a sudden Heath’s right knee gave out and he went to the ground, rolled on his back and grabbed his knee. It took only a few seconds before backstage personnel came to his aid and they cut the music. For nearly a minute, Heath just stayed in that position until he turned his head towards the crowd and said, “I was just cramping up. I’m sorry.”
