Comeback Trail to Ohio Bumped by Toney?
by Joe Pietaro | MuscleSportMag
We are only a few short weeks out of the 2009 Arnold Classic and all the talk has been of the Big Three who missed the last Mr. Olympia due to injuries. Victor Martinez, who won the show in Ohio two years ago, is reported to be not only fully recovered from his knee injury, but his leg development appears as if he never had to miss any time.
The huge Branch Warren is coming back from an injured triceps and has his sights set on winning the show that he has taken the Most Muscular award in. In his two previous Arnold Classic appearances, Warren has finished in second and fourth the last two years.

Gustavo Badell as an Arnold Classic Wild Card?
by Joe Pietaro | MuscleSportMag
One name that hasn’t been mentioned as a serious contender for the upcoming Arnold Classic has been Gustavo Badell. A good question is why not? The ‘Freakin’ Rican’ had a fairly successful 2008 in three top contests. He was the runner-up at the Ironman Pro Invitational, sixth in the last Arnold Classic and 10th at the Mr. Olympia.
That was Badell’s best year since 2005 when he won the Ironman and placed third at both the Arnold and Olympia. He also finished in the Top 3 at the 2004 O.

Victor Richards Missed His Calling
by Joe Pietaro | MuscleSportMag
There are times when an athlete hits his prime in an era that doesn’t fit. Victor Richards is a prime example of that. When he burst onto the bodybuilding scene back in 1982, such massive size was not commonplace on the contest stage. His 5?10? frame packed on an incredible 370 pounds of muscle during the offseason, which for a man that entered only five competitions in ten years, was his common bodyweight.
Richards won four of those shows and was the first runner-up in the other, and included three in the U.S. (1982 America Cup, 1983 Teen Los Angeles, 1984 California Gold Cup Classic) and two abroad (1989 Mr. Barbados, 1992 Nigerian Championships).

“1,000 Sit-Ups And Crunches A Day and Still No Abs!”
by Tom Venuto
After 18 years in the fitness business, “How do I get great abs” is still BY FAR the most frequently asked question I receive out of the 30,000+ emails that come into my office every month. No doubt, it’s because abs are the one body part that most people are the most frustrated with. Although their questions are often phrased differently and each person’s situation seems unique, my answer to “how do I get great abs” is almost always the same…and you’re about to hear it…
“1,000 Sit-Ups And Crunches A Day and Still No Abs!”
One question I received recently REALLY got my attention because a young guy told me he was doing 1,000 crunches and sit ups a day and said he still couldn’t see his abdominals. He wrote:
“Tom: I have been working out for around a year now and I cannot get my lower abs into any type of shape. I’m starting to see my upper abs a little bit, which is great, but despite doing 900 various crunches, ab roller, and 100 sit-ups four days a week, along with my regular workout on the weights, I still have a tire around my waist. What else can I do?”

IFBB Pro Victor Martinez Falsely Linked to Supplement Store in Dominican Republic
IFBB professional bodybuilder Victor Martinez is expected to win the 2009 Arnold Classic bodybuilding contest on March 7, 2009 according to pro bodybuilding analysts. In addition to the rigorous precontest demands of preparing for one of the most prestigious pro bodybuilding contests on the calendar, Victor Martinez also had to contend with false reports published in the New York Daily News.
During the course of the Alex Rodriguez steroid investigation, the New York Daily News sent sports writer Christian Red down to the Dominican Republic presumably to find out how easy it was to obtain the same anabolic steroids purported to have been used by Alex Rodriguez i.e. testosterone and Primobolan. Alex Rodriguez admitted using anabolic steroids which he alleged were purchased in the Dominican Republic by his cousin.
Why Bodybuilding Has the Steroid Problem Solved
by Joe Pietaro | MuscleSportMag
While baseball gets dragged through the mud and takes all the other sports down with it, bodybuilding has gone about its business and continues to thrive. As soon as the National Pastime decided to rid the game of anabolic steroids on the public forum, the attention spread to everything from football to…cheerleading, believe it or not.
Like it or not, athletes have been looking for an advantage since the original Olympic games in Ancient Greece. Since the 1950s, one of those advantages has been steroids and the use of performance-enhancing drugs has been a part of the sports landscape ever since.

Fitness Pros Say Licensing Could be Bad for Business
Proposal by lawmaker seeks ‘standardization’
By Sandy Seegers
In 23 years as owner of a popular gym in Madison, Mike Bronco, a former professional tri-athlete, has made a career of helping those who want to become fit, lose weight or enhance their recovery.
Same with Mendham Township resident Wendy Ryan, who has a full-time job but has taught group strength, spin and step classes for 15 years simply for “the joy in seeing people having fun while they exercise.”
However, Bronco and Ryan must conform to changes in the industry and make decisions if the Fitness Professionals Licensing Act is enacted in New Jersey.

Vitamin B-6 Declared a “Drug” by FDA; to be Banned from Vitamin Supplements

God help us, because the FDA has now opened the gateway for all vitamins to be declared “drugs” and removed from sale by the nutritional supplement industry.
What they have done is declared that pyridoxamine (one of the three primary forms of vitamin B-6 found in nature, and the most widely used form in multi-vitamin supplements) is in reality a “new drug,” thus clearing the way for it to be banned from sale as a nutritional supplement. (See the news article below this commentary for more details.)
Here’s what happened:
A North Carolina-based firm called Biostratum began manufacturing pyridoxamine-based drug called Pyridorin designed to prevent the progression of diabetic nephropathy (kidney disease). The company then petitioned the FDA to declare pyridoxamine a “new drug,” clearing the way for them to hold an iron-clad monopoly on its sale.

Houston, Wii Have a Problem… Trainer Sues Nintendo over Wii Fit!
by John Romano
A California fitness trainer is suing the video game company Nintendo, asking them to pull its Wii Fit games from shelves claiming it’s “contributing to the epidemic of obesity.”
According to Nintendo, by playing the Wii Fit game users can “work towards personal goals of better health and fitness,” but bodybuilder, Michael Torchia (former Mr. California), disagrees and says the game maker needs to place a warning on the games which say they’re for entertainment, not fitness.
Torchia says that in addition to a lack of actual fitness in the game, many users are actually injuring themselves.
“Not only are people getting injured due to a lack of instruction, they are also developing improper stroke patterns from long-term use of the sports games which can potentially [affect] their ability to excel in those specific activities later in life,” he said.

Why Dave Palumbo and John Romano Really left Muscular Development!
by John Romano

Many would describe it as a “cyber riot” that erupted after MD publisher Steve Blechman abruptly and unceremoniously fired Dave Palumbo and me from our executive positions at Muscular Development. For the last week, he and his staff have struggled with a barrage of subscription cancellations, members fleeing the site for refuge elsewhere, and mountains of posts in our favor by angry forum members that required censorship and deletion by frazzled moderators (so much for their policy of “no bull”). Eventually, the demands to explain our departure became so furious that Blechman had no choice but to make a statement.
